Bangladesh invites Thailand to invest in hi-tech park in health-food technology


Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for the investment of the neighboring country Thailand in the hi-tech parks established across the country and the special economic zone of Bangladesh and cooperation in health and food technology. She raised the point at a press conference on Thursday to highlight the experience of her visit to Thailand.

In addition to addressing the 80th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNSCAP) at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok, the Prime Minister also highlighted the special session and presentation of Digital Bangladesh by the ICT Division.

Regarding the discussion with Thailand, the Prime Minister also said, “In the context of the discussion, the overall development of the country, especially the achievement of the SDGs (came up). Besides, we need cooperation in terms of regional cooperation, especially in communication. From that point of view, our discussion with Thailand has been very sincere. Moreover, in terms of business and investment, I have called on the Prime Minister of Thailand to invest in Bangladesh. We will give them space in hi-tech parks and economic zones. New doors were opened for cooperation in energy and tourism and free trade”.

She said, my official visit to Thailand will be a milestone in bilateral relations.

In response to various questions from the journalists, the Prime Minister said that we are promoting cooperative and technology-based agricultural systems for food self-sufficiency. A digital land system has been formulated so that farmers’ land does not fall vacant. 70% subsidy is being given for agricultural mechanization in Haor region. Research has brought great success in agriculture.

In reference to the ‘lack of confidence’ that the farmers’ land will be taken away in the cooperative farming system, the Prime Minister said, ‘Now we have digitized it, whoever owns the land will own it. Farmer’s land will never be taken.’

At the press conference on the right side of the Prime Minister, Deputy Leader of Jatiya Sangsad Begum Matia Chowdhury, Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak were present. At  her right side, there were Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman and Commerce Minister Ahsanul Islam Titu.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Bangkok on April 24 as part of a bilateral and multilateral visit to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Sretha Thavisin.

The Prime Minister returned home from Bangkok last Monday (April 29) after a six-day official visit to Thailand.  

Regarding the visit, the Prime Minister said that the progress regarding the initiation of free trade agreements including the increase of bilateral trade, the increase of inter-communication etc. will play a special role in strengthening the bilateral economic relations. The visit will play a significant role in Bangladesh’s candidature as ASEAN’s ‘Sectoral Dialogue Partner’ by 2024.  

She also said, after the formation of the government, this time I visited Thailand for the first time. In other words, the neighboring country near the house. I always value friendship. Thailand has a lot of research and excellence in food, crops, fruit production. I am discussing these matters. How can the two countries share research, use the experience among themselves.’

Sheikh Hasina urged the human rights organizations to be vocal on the Palestine-Israel issue and suggested that instead of spending money on arms trade, it should be spent on climate change.
